At Mooroolbark College, we place a strong emphasis on providing valuable leadership opportunities for our students within the College community. Our student leadership program offers a diverse range of roles that empower students to make positive contributions and have a voice within the College.

The College Captains at Mooroolbark College represent the student body at official functions, lead College Assemblies, and serve as role models for their peers. They engage in regular meetings with college administration and play an active role in the Student Representative Council (SRC).

House Captains take on leadership roles within their respective houses, leading activities during carnivals, advocating for students, and contributing to various academic and extra curricula-related activities. They work closely with the head of house to foster a sense of community.

Middle School House Captains collaborate with House Captains and House Leadership teams to implement student initiatives, promote community within the houses, and support house activities, fostering leadership skills in younger students.

Students interested in leadership roles within the SRC go through a nomination, application, and interview process. We encourage all students to consider nominating themselves for the SRC to contribute to the vibrant community at Mooroolbark College. House representatives participate in elections to determine successful candidates for each year level in every house. The SRC structure ensures fair representation of all students through various committees, including College Captains, House Captains, Middle School House Captains, and house representatives from different year levels.

The SRC President leads the Executive Team, oversees SRC activities, and represents the SRC at official events. They work closely with College administration to advocate for student initiatives and ensure student voices are heard.

As the support system for the SRC President, the Vice President assists in leading the Executive Team, coordinating activities, and collaborating with other SRC members to ensure the success of student initiatives and projects.

The SRC Secretary plays a crucial role in maintaining records, facilitating communication within the SRC, coordinating logistics for events, and supporting the Executive Team with administrative tasks to ensure the smooth operation of the Student Representative Council.

Responsible for engaging the student body in SRC initiatives, managing publicity and promotion of events, and collaborating with school communication channels, the Engagement and Publicity Manager ensures awareness and participation in SRC activities.

Two students are selected as Arts Captains and throughout the year their role involves:Organising performances at assemblies Assisting with the many and varied aspects of Mooroolbark College’s contribution to the Arts and Performing Arts activities; including the College Production.

Two students are selected as Sports Captains and throughout the year their role involves:

  • Organising Interschool and Interhouse activities
  • Assisting and running the many and varied aspects of Mooroolbark College’s contribution to the Sports including the College Swimming Carnival, College Athletics Carnival.

Two students are selected as Social Justice Captains and throughout the year their role involves:

  • Organising and promoting specific social foundation and charities that assist many within our Community
  • Assisting and running activities throughout the year that align with the College values and the passions of the student body.

This is a leadership role that involves:

  • Writing and reviewing new books that come into the Library
  • Assisting in borrowing, returning and shelving books at recess and/or lunch
  • Assisting in organizing and/or writing book reviews
  • Helping to coordinate and organise reading events at school; including Premier’s Reading Challenge, Book Week and The Great Mooroolbark College Bake off

Leadership opportunities begin early at Mooroolbark College. Students can join the SRC, or become an Ambassador. The two types of Ambassadors are:

  • Undertaking school tours with the College Principal
  • Meeting and greeting special guests
  • Attending appropriate information/open nights
  • Hosting the Grade 5 All-Rounder day
  • Volunteering to attend local community events

At Mooroolbark College, the selection process for student leadership positions involves a comprehensive approach to ensure the best candidates are chosen to represent and lead their peers. The process includes the following key steps:

Application

Students interested in leadership roles are required to submit an application outlining their skills, experiences, and reasons for seeking a leadership position. The application serves as a way for students to showcase their qualifications and motivations for taking on a leadership role within the College community.

Selection Panel

The selection panel consists of a diverse group of individuals who play a crucial role in evaluating and selecting student leaders. The panel typically includes:

  • Previous year student leaders: Former student leaders provide insights into the responsibilities and expectations of leadership roles
  • Teaching and Learning Specialist – Student Efficacy and Student Leadership: This specialist brings expertise in student development, and leadership
  • College Principal: The College Principal plays a key role in overseeing the selection process and ensuring alignment with the College’s values and goals
  • Mentors for the position: Mentors, such as House Leaders and Key Learning Area Leaders, provide guidance and support to student leaders in their respective roles

The selection panel collaborates to review applications, conduct interviews, and assess candidates based on criteria such as leadership potential, communication skills, teamwork, and commitment to the College community.
