Year 7 & 8 Administrative & Course Handbook

TECHNOLOGY YEAR 7 FOOD STUDIES In this course students will learn practical food preparation skills, kitchen safety and hygiene, use of a range of equipment. They will develop an understanding of nutrition and how food choices relate to nutrition. Students will be introduced to the Technological Process, which includes the response to a design brief, research, production and evaluation. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE • Understand and apply safe food handling procedures. • Identify and explain the factors that influence food choice. • Ability to prepare a variety of meals and snacks. • Ability to follow a written recipe. • Research and evaluate different foods. YEAR 7 PRODUCT DESIGN In the course students will be exposed to: safe working practices and environmental issues, production and the assemblyof practical tasks, simplematerial testing, design issues including function and aesthetics, evaluation of work practices and competency of tool handling techniques. They will be introduced to fundamentals woodworking and product design. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE • Development of basic woodworking skills, such as Marking Out, finishing, filing and sanding, assembling and sawing. • Understanding of basic design concepts, designing, producing and evaluating a product. • Develop safe working practices. YEAR 8 DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY In this course students will be developing skills in using Information and Communications Technology. Students will understand the functionality of the ICT tools as well as their application and the affects in the wider community. Students will learn to use technology to solve problems and work efficiently and collaboratively within their studies and in the world around them. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE • Program a selection of micro controllers and robots for specific purposes. • Apply logical and algorithmic thinking to problem solving • Access and use the school’s digital resources. YEAR 8 TEXTILES In this course students will be develop an understanding of the design process and be able to apply this knowledge to produce a product of their choice. Students will investigate sustainability and indigenous design. They will develop a range of practical skills and demonstrate their understanding of the safe use of tools and equipment. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE • Understand the design process and respond to a design brief. • Develop skills in hand sewing and using a sewing machine safely. • Develop skill in a range of fabric design techniques.
